Now iplayer, YouTube, Spotify and gang can be blocked by Broadband providers
Pinsent Masons, International law specialist, the people behind OUT-LAW blog, wrote an article last Friday which has made a stir on there shores.
“There is no legal barrier in the UK to Internet service providers (ISPs) blocking content from website operators who do not pay them,” the first line of the piece says. The news made its way after profuse publicity between BBC and BT.
The leading broadband providers from UK made a point towards the costs scenario linked with the subscribers who watch content on line. Prior to publication of Digital Britain report last week, it was recommended that owner of popular online streaming sites would have to pay broadband providers for the costs coming while watching these streaming videos.
The article also went on to point out that “As long as an ISP explains its actions in its fair use policies or statements of terms and conditions it is permitted to block whatever it likes.”
Making its point towards this wide loophole in British law, the OUT -LAW has really came to expose the weakness. But we don’t think anything is going to happen suddenly. In this competitive market which has now became smaller by merger of Tiscali with TalkTalk, no one will be eager to get known in the name of an ISP which has blocked YouTube.

Mobile Broadband Prices reduced by 3
3 Mobile Broadband has slashed its rates on the mobile broadband packages in order to contribute its share to the cheap broadband market. Earlier, the broadband provider was offering the pay as you go dongle for GBP 29.99. It has now reduced to GBP 19.99 by it. Now it is easy for the customers to buy the ZTE MF 627 USB modem, and also add the credit of 1GB download allowance to it for GBP 10. Not only this, larger top ups are available at GBP 15 and GBP 25 along with the download allowances of around 25GB and 7 GB. 3 has also minimised the price of its one month mobile broadband product to just GBP 9.99 comprising of a mobile broadband dongle and with an extra GBP 15 a month. Apart from this, it will also offer a 5GB monthly usage limit. Moreover, its Ready to Go package has also reduced from GBP 49.99 to GBP 39.99. There is no variation in the other Pay as you Go mobile broadband packages of the company. If a customer buys a prime product, then he or she will be getting a 3GB MF 627 mobile broadband dongle. It is already full with a usage of 3GB.
3GB is enough for sending 3,000 emails per month, for downloading 15 four minute videos and a 30 hours online and a 100 four minute music track. The customers can easily put top ups for the same price and denominations here, after using the preloaded credits along with the Ready to Go package,
By doing reduction in the rates and by introducing enticing packages, 3 has come out as one among of the cheapest and fantastic broadband suppliers in the UK. This company has invented a SIM only mobile broadband in the country for the first time. In the meantime, one month mobile broadband has developed a lot if we talk about growth rates in the country’s market. It is found that the customers get very attracted to this scheme. The reason behind this is that it requires only 30 days notice for canceling the contracts without giving rise to any financial burden.

£25 to discard BT broadband
It has been reported that the consumers of BT Broadband have to pay up for £25 in order to extend their service – even if their contract period have touched the end.
The charge is valid to all consumers who like to completely end their tenure of contract of their broadband connection, instead of taking turn to a new ISP using a MAC code to switch broadband provider.
The charge was increased from £18.11 to £25 last month and presently featured by PC Pro.
“When you terminate your broadband service and don’t urge and utilise a migration authorisation code (MAC) or another recognised transfer process to turn to another service provider, from 12 June 2009 you’ll have to pay a cease charge of £25.00,” said BT Broadband’s (www.BT.com) fresh terms and conditions.
“You will not have to go with this cost in the case you are changing home and we are not able to facilitate the service at the new home address.”
A BT spokesman added: “The purpose of this charge is to attract the consumers to utilise the correct migration process and cover technical costs incurred when this process is not used.”
Michael Phillips, product director of reputed Broadband Comparison Site, stated: “Customers who have completed a 12 or even 18 month contract with BT should not be charged if they wish to end their service.”
“These are tough times for most of the consumers, and some simply might not be able to fulfill their broadband monthly bills any more. And for others in that position – expecting to cut costs – £25 is a lot of money.”

O2 to provide Napster Music Download to Sony Ericsson users
Despite of the fact that mobile phones are getting enhanced with high end technologies most of the users still look out to use them for their general functions.
It is pretty late for the users to adopt the culture of music and gaming downloads in a well established basis, the latest news by Sony Ericsson mobile phones reveals the collaboration in UK along with online digital media giant Napster hints for preferably earlier than expected.
O2 appearance is quite appreciable, that lets the service to search, browse, preview and purchase the complete tracks of music from the Napster catalogue, which currently has songs above five millions. Payment can be made via phone’s contract, credit or computer, moreover the services are enhanced and modified for customers by providing support that rely on choices and track that were purchased before.
It is a challenging collaboration and in terms of the modest opinion it appears to have a fall before getting started. There was unfavourable behaviour relating to legal downloads of music as it was having expensive prices when compared to the similar services like this in other countries like USA and Russia. It is expected that ‘rip-off Britain’ can be go for strike one more time. 99p per track will have to be paid back for downloading the service or £4 for the five tracks makes the digital music as costly as purchasing splitting album by yourself. Now it is left to be answered, will the comfort and variety on offers level the uncompetitive prices? So lets wait and observe.

Music industry now with Virgin
With the exception of prohibited or the illegal downloaders, broadband providers have become among the least liked parties to turn up for the record companies’ Christmas card list. But after the announcement of crackdown, Virgin Media seems to at least except some form of the seasonal salutations.
The warm hold of the music industry follows the intimations of Virgin Media that it would suspend access of the internet for the established illegal downloaders. It’ll also find the favour among the creative industries is the introduction of an unlimited music download subscription service.
The BPI has the most free with its praise by dubbing the ISP’s response as a proof that “graduate response is a workable way forward”. The Universal, the first major to sign up for Virgin Media’s service stated, that the news was very much heartening because of the fact that the company’s super-fast connections have proved to be a “heaven” for illegal downloaders.
How effective the anti-piracy measures will and whether the service will enjoy in the way to take-up this another matter. But after few months, the suggested content providers and the ISPs’ relationship was soured beyond redemption.
